Ukraine prepares to vote on legislation allowing mobilization of prisoners in detention centers

The Minister of Justice in Ukraine, Denis Malyuska, has announced plans to bring a law proposal to a vote regarding the conscription of prisoners in detention centers.

The legal initiative is expected to be officially recorded next week, with the Ukrainian Parliament, known as Rada, set to cast their votes during the upcoming sessions, SIA reports with reference to foreign media.

"I believe that the draft law will be recorded next week. It will be voted on in the first and second readings during the upcoming sessions of the Rada. We plan to implement this by the end of summer at the latest. Thousands of prisoners are ready for military service. However, prisoners convicted for offenses such as 'violating military discipline' or 'committing crimes against the state' will not be included," Malyuska stated.

The final decision rests with the parliament, and Malyuska expressed confidence that discussions in parliament would not be prolonged, stating, "I don't think there will be extended debates in parliament because I haven't encountered any politician, deputy, or representative of the armed forces actively opposing this policy until now."

The involvement of prisoners in the Ukrainian conflict is not a new development. Since the summer of 2022, Russia has actively conscripted prisoners into the war effort.
