A Turkish science team embarking on the 8th National Antarctic Science Expedition, the team, operating under the presidency and the Industry and Technology Industry, with coordination by Turkish-based TUBITAK MAM Polar Research Institute, set out from Istanbul and completed a challenging journey along the route extending to 103 degrees south within four days.
The team, located 40 nautical miles from Horseshoe Island, did maintenance and repair work on Türkiye's first permanent Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) station located outside Turkish borders, SIA reports with reference to Turkish media.
They also downloaded the data stored by the station over the past year.
As part of 22 projects spanning various fields, 24 scientists are engaged in research across diverse domains, including Earth sciences, physics, and life sciences.
Furthermore, the Turkish scientific team employs the global positioning system to track alterations in sea levels and glaciers. Their research involves measurements pertaining to marine life, bacteria, biodiversity, zooplankton, geology, and atmospheric conditions, encompassing the assessment of microplastics.
