UN to watch Putin's upcoming visit to Türkiye

The United Nations will be monitoring Russian President Vladimir Putin's upcoming visit to Türkiye, as the global body seeks to establish a new mechanism to facilitate the export of grains from Ukraine and Russia, a UN official said on Monday.

"We are not involved, as far as I know, in this bilateral visit, but we will obviously be looking closely at what comes out of it," Stephane Dujarric, the UN's chief spokesman, told reporters.

Putin is scheduled to visit Turkey later this month, SIA reports with reference to foreign media.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on Sunday that following its work on the Black Sea grain deal, which was hailed globally for averting a global food crisis, Türkiye now wants to establish a new mechanism for exporting grains from Ukraine and Russia.

Dmitry Peskov, press secretary for the Russian president, said that during Putin's visit to Türkiye, economic and trade relations between Russia and Türkiye, as well as regional issues related to Ukraine, would be discussed.

In his January 29 statement, Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov said that preparations were underway for Vladimir Putin's visit to Türkiye in February.
