Milli Majlis commission: Massive disinformation campaign against Azerbaijan launched in Russia

A large-scale disinformation campaign against Azerbaijan has been launched from the Russian Federation, according to a statement of the Azerbaijani Milli Majlis (Parliament) Commission on Foreign Interference and Hybrid Threats, SİA informs.

The commission stated that the campaign began immediately after Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's interview with Saudi Arabia's Al Arabiya TV channel aired on August 27.

"Monitoring revealed that the President's historically substantiated response to a question about the Zangazur Corridor was deliberately taken out of context, distorted, and presented in a falsified form to Russian audiences," the statement said.

It added that the campaign, aimed at fueling anti-Azerbaijani sentiment in Russian society, is being carried out through television channels, news websites, social media platforms, and influential radical individuals.

The commission also noted that banned or restricted platforms in Russia, such as Facebook, Instagram, and X, are actively being used, along with fake social media accounts and bots created under the names of foreign nationals.

Another key tactic, according to the statement, has been the use of targeted advertisements within Azerbaijan's social media space that contain threats against the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

"These repugnant campaigns have no impact on public opinion in Azerbaijan. Such actions only serve to mislead Russian society with false narratives and to provoke unnecessary hostility toward neighboring states," the commission emphasized.

It also pointed to the role of pro-war "Z-bloggers" in spreading this sentiment and stated that the commission, together with relevant state bodies, is closely monitoring these unfriendly actions and will continue to implement preventive measures.
