Scientists have talked about the highest sea wave recorded on Earth.

In July 1958, a magnitude 8.3 earthquake shook the southeastern coast of Alaska. The landslide caused a huge tsunami that hit the coast. This is the largest sea wave recorded on the planet.

The landslide entered the water in the Gulf of Lithuania in southeastern Alaska, SIA reports quoting AZERTAC. Scientists estimate that the height of the wave caused by the rock falling into the water was 524 meters. It is 443 meters taller than the famous Empire State Building in New York.

"This is the biggest wave in history," he said. I think there have been higher waves before, but they have been around for a long time and can only be judged by geological sediments, ”said German Fritz, a scientist at Georgia State University of Technology.

According to the scientist, during the landslide in the Gulf of Lithuania, about 30 million cubic meters of rock fell into the water, which led to the formation of a huge wave. The shape of the bay also had an effect on the height of the wave.

"During an ordinary tsunami caused by a landslide, the waves move in a fan-like manner. However, the narrow shape of the Gulf of Lithuania and the steep slopes allowed the wave to move in one direction. The water could not move anywhere else and had to rise. That's why the height of the waves was so high, "Fritz said.

According to scientists, this type of wave is called megasunami in the media.
