A wave of violent unrest has swept across Bangladesh, leaving more than 300 people dead, with 94 killed on Sunday alone, police, doctors, and government officials said, according to SİA, which cites France Presse.
The protests and demonstrations erupted in the capital city of Dhaka and spread throughout the country following the announcement of a multi-day "non-cooperation" campaign against the government, initiated by the "Student Movement Against Discrimination" on Sunday. Clashes between anti-government students, police, and government supporters quickly escalated into deadly riots.
The local newspaper Daily Star previously reported that 14 police officers were among those killed in the unrest. Bangladesh, a country with a population of over 160 million, has a history of political instability and violence. In 1971, Bangladesh gained independence from Pakistan after a bloody war that claimed an estimated 3 million lives.
