On Monday evening, Italian Premier Giuseppe Conte has put a lockdown on travel in the entire country, in order to stop the spread of coronavirus, SIA reports.
This announcement comes after Giuseppe Conte decided to put Italy in an emergency quarantine on Sunday, as the country moved to limit contagion at the heart of the outbreak in Europe. The measures are the most drastic to be imposed outside China since the outbreak began, taking effect on Tuesday.
The decree covers the Lombardy region and at least 15 provinces in neighbouring regions: Modena, Parma, Piacenza, Reggio Emilia, Pesaro and Urbino, Alessandria, Asti, Novara, Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Vercelli, Padua, Treviso and Venice.
Major cities such as Milan, a major financial centre, and also the prime tourist destination of Venice are affected. However, there was some confusion on Sunday as to how the measures are to be applied in practice.
Many flights and train services continued running as normal. Italy's Civil Aviation Authority ENAC said that all airports, including those within the restricted zones, remained open and operational. But it was not immediately clear what the emergency measures mean for tourists and other visitors already in northern Italy, or planning to go – such as the many workers in Lombardy who travel from Switzerland across the border.
