UN committee warns France over colonial policy in Kanaky

An article dedicated to the provincial elections to be held on June 28 in Kanaky (New Caledonia) and France's colonial policy has been published on the Asia Pacific SİA website, according to the Baku Initiative Group (BIG).

As noted, the article references a post shared on the social media account of the Baku Initiative Group (BIG), and covers the issues raised by the BIG regarding France's the restriction of the rights of indigenous peoples, repressive, colonial practices against the Kanak people.

The article emphasized that the decision of the French prime minister to officially announce provincial elections in Kanaky is assessed as an attempt by official Paris to maintain neo-colonial control over the territory and to weaken the political will of the Kanak people. Because the said elections will determine not only the composition of the provinces, but also the formation of the New Caledonia Congress, its government, and the future political governance model. In this regard, the process is of decisive importance in terms of the Kanak people's right to self-determination and the future political status of the territory.

This year, the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) adopted a statement regarding Kanaky, which is under French colonial rule. In the statement, the Committee warned France over the situation created as a result of its colonial policy in Kanaky and, expressing serious concern, emphasized that political and constitutional reforms related to Kanaky must be carried out only with the participation of the indigenous Kanak people, in a free and transparent manner.

On the eve of the elections, the loyalists, considered the fifth column of the French government on the island, proposed granting voting rights to persons born in New Caledonia and their spouses. This initiative could result in the inclusion of approximately 10,000 new voters in the electorate, which raises serious concerns as it could affect the political representation of the Kanak people and the existing electoral balance.

The next elections, planned for 2024 after the last provincial elections held in 2019, were postponed three times. The Constitutional Council of France declared that the elections must be held no later than June 28 of this year. Although official Paris presents this process as a technical procedure, in reality, the elections are of strategic importance in terms of New Caledonia's political future and the Kanak people's right to self-determination.
