European Union summit will discuss closing the Strait of Hormuz

The situation in the Middle East and the negative consequences of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz for Western countries will be among the topics of discussion at the European Political Community (EPC) summit on May 4 in the capital of Armenia, SİA reports.

According to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's office, in Yerevan he will "discuss with colleagues how states can best contribute to long-term security in the strait to stem rising costs, ensure economic stability, and prevent the ongoing conflict from fueling domestic tensions." Downing Street noted that these discussions will build on those held in mid-April in Paris at a conference on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. At that conference, it was decided that the United Kingdom and France would lead a multinational mission to protect freedom of navigation in this vital trade artery, but only after the conflict had ended. Starmer emphasized the mission's exclusively "peaceful and defensive" nature.
