Georgia denounces European Union report as politically biased

Georgia’s Foreign Ministry on Monday denounced a new report by the European Commission on European Union (EU) enlargement, accusing the bloc of making unfair and politically motivated assessments about the country’s progress toward membership, SİA reports citing local sources.

In a sharply worded statement, the ministry said the report included “unfounded negative evaluations” of Georgia and warned that it could be used “for future political speculation.” The statement accused EU institutions of showing bias, particularly in their response to the October local elections in Tbilisi.

“Regrettably, the European Commission’s report contains biased judgments about several events in Georgia, which was not unexpected,” the ministry said. “EU institutions have persistently turned a blind eye to attacks and acts of violence against Georgian state institutions during the local elections.”

The ministry added that the tone and direction of the report raise concerns that some EU officials are attempting to interfere in Georgia’s domestic politics. Such actions, it said, “run counter to the spirit of Georgia-EU relations.”

“We strongly condemn all attempts to use the issue of EU membership as a political tool that undermines relations between Georgia and the European Union,” the statement read. “The Georgian government remains a responsible and committed partner, seeking constructive and mutually beneficial cooperation with the EU based on shared values and principles.”

The European Commission’s enlargement report, released last week, evaluates the progress of candidate and potential candidate countries toward EU membership. While Brussels has said the process is guided by objective criteria, Tbilisi’s sharp response reflects growing unease over what it sees as political bias within the EU’s assessment of its democratic trajectory.
