Peru’s president ousted by Congress amid rising unrest

Peru’s Congress has voted to remove President Dina Boluarte from office, following a late-night session convened to discuss her impeachment, SİA reports citing foreign media.

A vast majority of lawmakers across the political spectrum supported her dismissal, citing "permanent moral incapacity" as the reason.

Addressing the nation on television after the vote, Boluarte questioned the potential consequences for Peru’s democratic stability.

Once one of the most unpopular leaders in the world with an approval rating of just 2 to 4 percent, Boluarte’s presidency was marked by repeated protests, scandals, ongoing investigations, and a sharp increase in gang-related violence. Anti-government demonstrations intensified in recent months amid growing crime, and public outrage spiked earlier Thursday after a shooting at a concert in Lima.

Early Friday, 122 of 130 lawmakers voted in favor of Boluarte’s removal, following strong support for four separate impeachment motions. Congress leader Jose Jeri was sworn in as interim president, as Peru currently has no vice president.

Boluarte did not attend the overnight congressional hearing. Outside the Congress building, demonstrators waving Peruvian flags cheered after the vote was announced.

“In all my actions, I have called for unity,” Boluarte said after her removal. “In this context, I have thought not of myself but of more than 34 million Peruvians who deserve better.”
