Strong earthquake off southern Philippines leaves casualties, triggers tsunami alert

A powerful earthquake struck off the southeastern coast of the Philippines on Friday, killing at least two people and prompting brief tsunami warnings before authorities lifted them, SİA reports citing The Washington Post.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake, initially measured at magnitude 7.4 and later upgraded to 7.6, was centered offshore about 60 kilometers southeast of Manay in Davao Oriental province. It originated from movement along a shallow fault about 10 kilometers beneath the seabed.

Officials had urged residents in coastal communities to evacuate amid fears of a potential tsunami, warning of “life-threatening wave heights.” The advisory was later withdrawn after no significant waves were reported. Phivolcs said aftershocks and structural damage were expected in areas near the epicenter.
