Typhoon Ragasa has struck southern China, prompting the evacuation of nearly two million residents as authorities brace for its impact, SİA reports citing The Guardian.
The storm comes after at least 17 people were reported dead and others missing in Taiwan, where a lake breach on Tuesday triggered severe flooding in the eastern part of the island.
Although downgraded from a super typhoon to a severe typhoon on Wednesday, Ragasa remains extremely powerful, with peak winds of 241 km/h recorded in Taishan County in Guangdong province. Equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane, Ragasa has been the world’s strongest storm this year, battering the South China Sea for several days.
Prior to landfall, the storm caused injuries to 90 people in Hong Kong as it passed near the city’s coastline, according to local hospital authorities. Ragasa reached Hailing Island, Yanjiang City in Guangdong, around 17:00 local time (09:00 GMT) on Wednesday, crossing the mainland with sustained winds of 144 km/h and stronger gusts.
