NATO may target Russian aircraft entering alliance airspace

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that NATO should shoot down Russian aircraft if they enter Alliance airspace, said military expert and retired Ukrainian colonel Roman Svitan, SİA reports.

The expert stated that from a military perspective, any approaching combat aircraft constitutes a threat and should be neutralized. He explained that while civilian planes follow international regulations under the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), military aircraft are considered an inherent danger, especially during ongoing or potential hostilities.

Svitan noted that NATO has already engaged unmanned aerial vehicles over its territory and predicted that targeting Russian manned aircraft could be the next step. He emphasized that NATO countries should raise their alert levels and issue orders to neutralize any aircraft without transponders after prior warnings, while maintaining compliance with international law.

Regarding potential European responses, Svitan said that Europe might protest symbolically but is unlikely to take direct retaliatory action. He also commented on the recent U.S. lifting of sanctions on Belavia, suggesting that while spare parts could reach Russia, the overall impact on Russian aviation would be limited.
