Denmark’s Prime Minister calls Copenhagen Airport drone disruption a deliberate attack

Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen described the drone incident at Copenhagen Airport on Monday as “the most serious attack on Danish critical infrastructure to date,” SİA reports citing Ritzau news agency.

The disruption, caused by multiple large drones, temporarily halted airport operations.

Frederiksen said the episode reflects the challenges modern societies face and stressed that authorities are considering all possibilities regarding the perpetrators. She also noted the incident fits a broader pattern of recent European airspace threats, including drone intrusions, hacking attacks, and unauthorized flights.

Copenhagen Airport reported a temporary closure on its official social media channels, citing “activity” in the airspace. The airport reopened hours later but warned of lingering delays and cancellations. Danish police confirmed the drones were highly maneuverable, approaching from different directions, and turning their lights on and off before disappearing.

Police Chief Superintendent Jens Jespersen described the operation as being carried out by “an actor with the capabilities, the will, and the tools to execute such an action.” FlightRadar data showed about 35 flights were diverted due to the incident.

A similar drone event occurred on the same evening at Oslo Airport in Norway, forcing air traffic to be restricted to a single runway, according to broadcaster NRK. The episode has added to heightened security concerns in northern Europe amid recent Russian sabotage activities and multiple airspace violations involving drones and military aircraft in NATO countries.
