US blocks UN Security Council resolution on Gaza, citing lack of condemnation of Hamas

The United States vetoed a United Nations (UN) Security Council resolution on Thursday that called for a lasting ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages, arguing the measure did not adequately denounce Hamas, SİA reports, citing Israeli media.

The move left Washington isolated, as all 14 other council members voted in favor of the draft.

The text described conditions in Gaza as “catastrophic” and urged Israel to remove barriers on humanitarian aid deliveries to the more than two million Palestinians living in the enclave.

“Colleagues, US opposition to this resolution will come as no surprise,” said Morgan Ortagus, a senior American policy adviser, ahead of the vote. “It fails to condemn Hamas or acknowledge Israel’s right to self-defense, and it advances false narratives that play into Hamas’s hands.”

Ortagus added that other members had disregarded US concerns about the resolution’s “unacceptable” language, which she said was “performative action designed to draw a veto.”

The decision underscores the growing diplomatic divide between Washington and many of its allies over the nearly two-year conflict. The vote comes just ahead of the UN General Assembly, where recognition of a Palestinian state is expected to take center stage, a step opposed by both Israel and the US, but backed by key partners such as the United Kingdom and France.
