A powerful earthquake struck Russia’s Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula on Friday morning, prompting tsunami warnings across the region, SİA reports, citing foreign media.
The United States Geological Survey described the tremor, measured at magnitude 7.8, as an aftershock from the massive quake that hit the area in July. Russia’s Emergencies Ministry, however, reported the magnitude at 7.2.
Authorities confirmed that tsunami waves reached coastal areas, though no significant damage has been reported. Governor Vladimir Solodov said emergency services were placed on high alert and teams immediately began checking residential buildings and public facilities. “This morning once again puts the resilience of Kamchatka’s residents to the test,” Solodov wrote on Telegram.
Tsunami warnings were also extended to parts of the Kuril Islands. Videos circulating online showed chandeliers swaying, furniture shaking, and car alarms going off as the quake hit.
