Trump and Starmer to hold talks as UK visit moves from ceremony to politics

Donald Trump is set to meet Prime Minister Keir Starmer later today at Chequers, the prime minister’s countryside residence, as the US president’s state visit transitions from formal royal events to hard political discussions, SİA reports citing British media.

At last night’s state banquet in Windsor, Trump described the occasion as “one of the greatest honours of my life,” while King Charles highlighted the president’s “personal commitment to resolving some of the world’s toughest challenges.”

The day began with a farewell to the King and Queen following an overnight stay at Windsor Castle. From there, Trump traveled to Chequers, where he was welcomed by Starmer, Lady Starmer, and an official guard of honour. The two leaders are expected to view Winston Churchill’s archives before holding a closed-door bilateral meeting.

Their schedule also includes a joint press conference - a moment anticipated to be lively, given the leaders’ contrasting political views and personalities. Later, both men will attend a business reception alongside Chancellor Rachel Reeves.

The visit has already brought major announcements. On Tuesday, the US confirmed a record investment package valued at £150 billion, a deal the UK government hailed as the largest of its kind, creating thousands of new jobs. This followed another multibillion-pound technology agreement involving Microsoft and Google.

Still, today’s discussions may highlight areas of disagreement. Britain is reportedly preparing to formally recognise a Palestinian state, a move Washington views unfavourably.

Differences are also evident over Ukraine: London has been a firm backer of Kyiv, framing the conflict as a fight for democratic values, while Trump has taken a far less consistent line, showing ambivalence toward President Zelensky and striking a friendlier tone with Vladimir Putin.
