Two flying cars collided during a rehearsal for an upcoming airshow in northeastern China on Tuesday, leaving one pilot injured and causing one of the vehicles to crash to the ground and ignite, SİA reports citing foreign media.
Footage shared online and reported by Chinese state media showed thick smoke rising from one of the vehicles, while emergency responders, including fire trucks and ambulances, rushed to the scene.
The incident happened in Changchun, Jilin Province, as the city was preparing for a five-day airshow scheduled to start Friday. The vehicles, known as electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, were produced by Xpeng Aeroht, a subsidiary of the Chinese electric car manufacturer Xpeng.
In a statement to CNN, Xpeng Aeroht explained that the crash resulted from “insufficient spacing,” with one vehicle suffering damage to its fuselage and catching fire on impact. “All personnel on site are safe, and emergency response measures were carried out in an organized manner,” the company added, noting that a formal investigation has been launched.
