I don't see an end to the war in Ukraine - UN Secretary General

The UN Secretary General does not see an end to the war in Ukraine in the near future. Russia's war against Ukraine is unlikely to be resolved in the short term. This was stated by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres at a press conference in New York on Tuesday, September 16.

"I am not optimistic about progress in the short term in the peace process in Ukraine. Our position is very clear. We need an immediate ceasefire, but a ceasefire that leads to a solution based on the UN Charter, international law and General Assembly resolutions," he said.

The UN Secretary General recalled that Russia is strongly opposed to the idea of a ceasefire and insists on the need for a global agreement, which is "extremely difficult to achieve."

"I fear that we may see this war continue, at least for some time, with particularly dramatic levels of violence, because it has a huge impact on civilians, which is very unfortunate," Guterres said.

The UN Secretary General noted that the positions of Ukraine and Russia differ greatly. Ukraine wants to preserve its territorial integrity, while Russia wants to occupy large parts of Ukrainian territory.

Recall that the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas believes that the war in Ukraine will last "at least two more years."

President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the only way to stop the fighting in Ukraine is to first provide clear security guarantees, in particular from the United States.
