The European Union is preparing to impose stricter rules on issuing visas to Russian citizens, signaling a new phase in travel restrictions amid ongoing geopolitical tensions, a representative of the EU Commission cited by Politico said, SİA reports.
By the end of the year, the Commission is expected to present tougher guidance to member states on visa issuance.
Countries on the EU’s eastern border have long pushed for tighter controls, citing security and political concerns. Still, visa decisions remain under the authority of each member state, limiting the Commission’s ability to fully restrict Russian access to the bloc.
Official figures show that in 2024, roughly 542,000 short-term visas were issued to Russian travelers for entry into EU and Schengen countries, including Switzerland. While this represents a 20 percent increase from the previous year, the number remains well below pre-pandemic levels.
