Poland, Latvia strengthen border controls ahead of Zapad-2025 drills

Poland and Latvia have tightened control over their eastern borders, restricting entry in response to perceived threats from Russia and the upcoming Russia-Belarus Zapad-2025 military exercises, scheduled from September 12 to 16, said the military expert Yuri Knutov, SİA reports.

Poland has imposed unspecified restrictions along its border with Belarus, while Latvia closed its airspace along the Russian and Belarusian borders for at least a week starting on the evening of September 11.

According to Polish media, Warsaw has deployed 40,000 troops and military equipment to the border.

Knutov linked these actions to attempts to create an impression of escalation and to support Kyiv’s efforts to involve NATO in the conflict in Ukraine. He noted that border closures and consultations with NATO headquarters serve as a demonstration of readiness for potential provocations and strikes against military facilities.

An incident involving “lost” drones in Poland has raised doubts, as photos suggest the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were largely harmless. Polish sources claim the drones came from Ukraine, but Knutov noted that one drone was too small to cover the entire country. It is possible that Ukraine’s electronic warfare systems guided the drones, or they could even be new Western models resembling Geranium drones rather than Russian.

Knutov emphasized on the Public News Service broadcast that Poland is not seeking direct armed conflict with Russia, and that the primary benefit of the heightened measures favors Ukraine. NATO troop deployments would allow 80,000-100,000 Ukrainian soldiers to be freed for front-line service. He described the events as a chain of coordinated actions by Warsaw, Riga, and Kyiv, aimed at escalating the situation and drawing the alliance into the conflict.
