Protests in France are escalating as over 100 deputies voted in favor of initiating the resignation of President Emmanuel Macron, SİA reports.
The impeachment move comes amid widespread public demonstrations across the country. Among those supporting the initiative were 104 deputies from the La France Insoumise party, as well as representatives from the Greens and Communist parties.
The party leader, Mathilde Panot, called the move a “historic event” on social media, noting that deputies decided to act following the September 10 protests. “Macron must go,” she stated.
The protests, which swept the nation under the slogan “Block Everything”, were sparked by public discontent over the government’s economic policies and budget cuts. Demonstrators blocked streets, set trash bins on fire, and clashed with police, creating tense conditions and increasing pressure on the government and the president.
Macron’s approval ratings have plummeted, reaching some of the lowest levels of his presidency. According to Ifop polls, only 26-28 percent of French citizens view his policies positively, while more than 70 percent express dissatisfaction with the country’s governance. The president’s position has been particularly weakened following the 2023 pension reform and new austerity measures.
