Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed that 19 Russian drones entered the country’s airspace overnight amid ongoing strikes on western Ukraine, SİA reports citing foreign media sources.
Polish and NATO forces successfully shot down up to four of the drones, marking the first recorded interception of Russian drones over Polish territory.
According to the sources, the military operation has concluded, and most airports have resumed normal operations. Security experts are questioning whether the drone incursion was a deliberate test of NATO’s response capabilities, according to BBC's Security Correspondent Frank Gardner.
Meanwhile, a Russian diplomat in Poland dismissed reports of the airspace breach as “unfounded,” state media reports.
The drones were part of a large-scale aerial attack on Ukraine, where Russia launched 415 drones in a single night. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky indicated that “at least eight strike drones” targeted Polish territory, calling the incident a “highly dangerous precedent for Europe.”
On social media platform X, Prime Minister Tusk praised Polish Operational Command and NATO pilots for their swift response, saying, “Actions speak louder than words.” Poland’s armed forces reported that the security situation has stabilized, threat levels have returned to normal, and radar and ground-based air defense systems are operating routinely.
Officials also noted that while monitoring the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Poland remains on high alert and prepared to defend its airspace against further potential threats.
