South Korea plans to send officials to U.S. over detained workers

South Korea’s foreign minister is set to visit the United States on Monday to assist in securing the release of hundreds of Korean workers detained in Georgia last week, SİA reports.

U.S. authorities apprehended 475 individuals, including over 300 South Korean nationals, alleging they were employed illegally at a car battery manufacturing facility.

The plant, constructed by South Korean firms Hyundai and LG, represents one of the largest foreign investment initiatives in the state.

Enforcement actions like this have increased under President Donald Trump, who has pledged stricter measures against unauthorized immigration. Friday’s operation, however, risks straining ties with South Korea, a key ally and investor in the U.S..

Seoul voiced its “concern and regret” over the raid and called on Washington to uphold the rights of its citizens. The government has been working through the weekend to arrange the workers’ return, and an agreement has been reached to fly them back on a chartered plane.

Final arrangements regarding the timing and logistics are still being settled.
