A record number of wildfires have been registered in the United Kingdom this year, SİA reports, citing Sky News.
Fire services responded to 996 incidents, surpassing the previous record of 994 set in 2022.
Phil Garrigan, chair of the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC), said the fires often lasted for days and had a serious physical and psychological impact on firefighters. He noted that four summer heatwaves combined with low rainfall created dangerous conditions across many regions.
One of the most persistent fires occurred in the Langdale Moor area of North Yorkshire, which began on August 12 and spread across a large area. Other significant incidents included a blaze covering 72 hectares in Holt Heath, Dorset, and a fire on Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh, which caused major difficulties.
