Kallas criticizes Putin’s comments on World War II victory

The High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, Kaja Kallas, has called Russian President Vladimir Putin’s remarks on the Soviet Union and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) winning over Nazism in World War II “something new,” speaking at a conference organized by the European Union’s Institute for Security Studies, SİA reports.

Kallas commented on Putin’s statement, saying, “Russia turned to China and said: ‘Russia and China fought in World War II, we won World War II, we defeated Nazism,’ and I thought: ‘Well, this is something new.’”

She added that such remarks will raise many questions for those knowledgeable about history.

Putin, speaking ahead of his official visit to the PRC in an interview with Xinhua, stated that the Soviet and Chinese peoples bore the heaviest burden of World War II and suffered the largest human losses.

The Russian head of state emphasized that Moscow and Beijing strongly condemn any attempts to distort the history of World War II or glorify Nazis, militarists, and their collaborators, adding that some Western states are effectively revisiting the war’s outcomes and falsifying historical truths.

On September 1, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) members issued a statement marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, noting that the victory was achieved through the unity of all peace-loving states.

Putin concluded his four-day visit to China on September 3, attending the SCO summit and commemorative events for the 80th anniversary of World War II’s end, while holding meetings with several world leaders.

The visit included a grand military parade at Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, featuring thousands of Chinese soldiers, over a hundred aircraft, and hundreds of PLA ground vehicles. Authorities noted that all equipment displayed in the parade is produced in the PRC and already in service.

The parade was attended by leaders from 26 countries, including President Xi Jinping of China, Vladimir Putin, and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
