FLNKS calls for peaceful resistance against New Caledonia agreement imposed on Kanaks
The Kanak and Socialist National Liberation Front (Le Front de libération nationale kanak et socialiste, FLNKS), the main movement for the independence of New Caledonia, called on its supporters to peacefully mobilize and resist attempts by official Paris to impose a political settlement without the consent of the Kanak people, SİA informs referring to the French newspaper Le Monde.
"We are making a peaceful appeal to our active forces to say stop to the state if it intends to impose its policy," said trade unionist Marie-Pierre Goyes, who is a member of the FLNKS politburo, at a press conference in Noumea on Wednesday.
FLNKS Chairman Christian Thein, speaking via video link from Mulhouse (Haut-Rhin), for his part called the agreement "forced", proposed personally by French President Emmanuel Macron.
Dominique Fauchey, Secretary General of the Caledonian Union and member of the FLNKS political bureau, said the front officially rejects the Bougival Agreement draft due to its incompatibility with the foundations of the region's independence struggle.
Manuel Valls, Minister of State for Overseas France, said he would visit New Caledonia on August 18 to try to preserve the Bougival Agreement, which he presents as the fruit of months of work involving all parties, including the FLNKS delegation.
However, the leadership of the front stressed at a press conference that the final wording of the agreement does not reflect either the spirit of the negotiations or the movement's fundamental positions.
The FLNKS has declared its rejection of the Bougival Agreement. The Bougival Agreement was signed on July 12, 2025, in the city of Bougival near Paris between France and the Kanaki political forces (New Caledonia). The document envisages a new political model, within the framework of which the territory remains part of France, but receives the status of the "State of New Caledonia" - an autonomous entity with a special status. According to the document, the Kanaks will have dual citizenship - French and the newly established "Caledonian". The document also provides for a gradual expansion of the state's sovereign powers, including the transfer of powers in the sphere of defense, security and other areas.
However, the entry into force of the agreement is possible only after a positive outcome of the referendum planned in New Caledonia for 2026, which has caused discontent among supporters of independence for the region. Earlier, the International Front for Decolonization (FID) also rejected the Bougival Agreement. FID especially emphasized that the theory of "divided sovereignty" and the concept of "dual citizenship" contained in the agreement do not ensure the full implementation of the right to self-determination.
This right, as the organization recalled, is legally enshrined both in the French Constitution and in Resolution No. 1514 (XV) of the UN General Assembly, one of the key documents of international law. In May 2024, the actions of French security forces, accompanied by violence against Kanaks demanding the right to freedom, led to casualties in New Caledonia - 14 civilians were killed.
