US Army to increase number of Patriot battalions to 18

The US Armed Forces plan to increase the number of full-time Patriot anti-aircraft missile system (SAM) battalions from 15 to 18 units. This was reported on August 4 by the Defense News (DN) portal, citing sources, SİA reports.

"The army plans to increase its Patriot air and missile defense operational forces from 15 to 18 battalions, as well as a consolidated battalion that includes Patriot capabilities in Guam," the portal noted.

According to DN, all new Patriot systems that will roll off the assembly line for the US army will be equipped with LTAMDS and IBCS radars. It is emphasized that this will expand the height and range of the air defense system.

"So you can take the same 15 Patriot battalions that we have today, give them IBCS and LTAMD. And, in fact, when you use them quickly, it immediately doubles these capabilities," said Lieutenant General James Mingus, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Earlier, on July 19, it was reported that the United States decided to reorient the supply of Patriot air defense systems to its allies so that they could reach Ukraine faster. It was noted that this step highlights the difficulties in supplying Kiev with American air defense systems, as well as other Western weapons, since defense production lines are having a hard time coping with the requests of the Ukrainian authorities.

On July 14, US President Donald Trump announced that the United States and the European Union had reached an agreement on the supply of weapons to Ukraine. According to him, the United States will produce weapons for Ukraine, and European countries will pay for them.
