Paris court to review appeal in case of attack on Azerbaijani Embassy

The Paris Court of Appeals is set to review the case of the 2022 attack on the Azerbaijani Embassy in France, with a hearing scheduled for June 10, 2025.

The incident, which occurred in September 2022, was carried out by radical pro-Armenian activists and drew widespread international condemnation.

This is the first case of its kind in France, where an attack on a diplomatic mission is being legally addressed within the context of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict.

The main defendant, Loris Tufanian, a member of the Armenian nationalist movement Charjoum, was identified through video footage and eyewitness testimony. In a ruling issued on June 23, 2023, a French court sentenced Tufanian to a six-month suspended prison term and imposed a fine. However, the case has since been appealed and is now under review by the appellate court.

Representing Azerbaijan in the appeal is prominent international law attorney Edmond Verdié. Verdié emphasized the broader implications of the case, stating:
"We are not just defending a state or its representatives — we are defending the foundations of international law, diplomatic sovereignty, and peaceful coexistence between nations."

Legal experts suggest the court's decision could set an international precedent for the protection of diplomatic missions against acts of aggression.

The attack occurred on September 18, 2022, when a group of radical Armenian nationalists attempted to storm the Azerbaijani Embassy in Paris. The building sustained damage as attackers used metal barricades to break down the entrance, forcibly entering the premises and destroying property. Evidence from the incident was submitted to local courts, with demands for the prosecution of the perpetrators, including the lead organizer.

The Azerbaijani Embassy was legally represented by the French law firm Lexlor during the proceedings.

Investigators confirmed that the incident involved unlawful entry and vandalism, actions deemed a violation of international law — particularly the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which ensures the protection of diplomatic missions.
