The Supreme Court of Türkiye has upheld 40 life sentences handed down in 2020 to Abdulgadir Masharipov (a native of Uzbekistan), who carried out the terror attack at Istanbul's Reina nightclub in 2017, killing 39 people, according to CNN Turk, SİA informs via TASS.
The court reviewed the convict's appeals and ruled that the sentences do not contradict the law.
Masharipov was found guilty of premeditated murder of 39 people and attempted murder of 79 people. In September 2020, the court sentenced him to 40 aggravated life sentences and 1,368 years in prison for each charge. The Supreme Court also reviewed appeals from 31 other convicts involved in the nightclub attack case who received various sentences.
Their sentences were also upheld without changes. Among the deceased, 16 people were subjects of Jordan, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and citizens of Lebanon, Libya, and Israel. The terrorist group "Islamic State" claimed responsibility for the attack.
