Rail Transport Resumes Between Tunisia and Algeria After Nearly 30 Years

Rail transport between Tunisia and Algeria has resumed after nearly three decades.

According to a statement from the Tunisian Ministry of Transport, this development will support the warmer growth of bilateral relations between the two countries, which share strong historical ties. The first train, departing from the Algerian city of Annaba, arrived in the Tunisian capital, Tunis, completing its inaugural journey.

To ensure the strength of the railway line and the continuity of services, Tunisian authorities coordinated closely with their Algerian counterparts. This route is expected to boost tourism and trade, particularly in border towns between the two nations.

Work is ongoing to facilitate freight train services along the railway line, which will also eventually support passenger transport in the near future.

The railway line between Tunisia and Algeria ceased operations in 1995 due to security concerns. A line that was briefly reopened in 2003 was shut down again due to technical malfunctions.
