Over 37,000 hectares cleared of mines in Azerbaijan's Aghdam

A total of 37,154 hectares Azerbaijan’s Aghdam district have been cleared of mines to date, Alakbar Alakbarov, an employee of the Ministry of Emergency Situations (MES) of Azerbaijan, told Report.

Speaking during a media tour organized by the Special Risk Rescue Service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations (MES), the Special Purpose Military Unit for Mine Action, and the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) to the area where demining work is being carried out in the Aghdam district, he further highlighted that a total of 31,105 landmines and unexploded ordnance have been detected and neutralized in the Aghdam district.

The official added that the public is regularly updated on the progress of activities aimed at combating the mine threat:

"The Special Purpose Military Unit of the Special Risk Rescue Service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations is also involved in clearing mines and unexploded ordnance, as well as explosive remnants of war in the liberated territories.

For information, I would like to note that currently, 37,154 hectares of territory have been cleared and 31,105 mines and unexploded ordnance have been detected and neutralized in the Aghdam district.

During this activity, our personnel have undergone high-level training, and as a result of the head of state's instructions, they have been equipped with modern equipment for the effective implementation of clearance activities. Mechanical means are used in the clearance of territories."

As a result of demining operations conducted from November 10, 2020, to May 19, 2025, a total of 200,321 hectares of land in Azerbaijan’s liberated territories have been cleared of mines. Additionally, 196,056 mines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) have been detected and neutralized. Of these, 137,422 are UXO, 36,881 are anti-personnel mines (APM), and 21,753 are anti-tank mines (ATM).

From November 10, 2020, to May 19, 2025, a total of 237 mine incidents have been recorded.

From November 10, 2020, to May 19, 2025, 394 people have become mine victims. Of the 394 mine victims, a total of 70 people have died, and 324 have received injuries of varying degrees. Among the mine victims, 210 are civilians, including 14 minors and young people, and 1 woman; of these, 55 have died, and 155 have received injuries of varying degrees.

From 1991 to the present day, more than 3,400 people have been recorded as mine victims. Of these, 362 are minors and young people, and 38 are women.
