Deputy Minister unveils main issues that Azerbaijan will raise at COP29

“I would say that COP29 is the most important international event that Azerbaijan hosted so far,” said Elnur Soltanov, Deputy Minister of Energy of the Republic of Azerbaijan and chief Executive Director for COP29 Azerbaijan at the training held for English-speaking journalists of Azerbaijan themed "Sustainable development and climate change", APA reports.

He said that the discussions about the climate change are the most important discussions of the world.

The Deputy Minister said that climate change, global warming are invetiable, but keeping the increase rate of warming at 1.5°C is the main goal: “We can achieve this and consensus between countries is important for taking steps in this direction. Because it was already confirmed that the "human contribution" to the increase in temperature is undeniable,” – he emphasdized.

Azerbaijani Deputy Minister also reminded that Azerbaijan has declared that itss ready to join joint international efforts aimed at reducing global methane emissions by at least 30% by 2030.

Elur Soltanov also emphasized that there are dissatisfactions between the global North and the global South regarding the steps to be taken within the framework of the fight against climate change.

“The poor financial capabilities of some developing countries do not allow them to transition to a green economy,” – he added.

The Deputy Minister noted that antagonism cannot be allowed in the discussions about the climate change: “The difference of opinions can exist between the states and there’re different platforms to discuss this, however, there is no room for antagonism in discussions on this very issue,” – he stressed.

The Deputy Minister said that the responsibility falls on countries to take steps to combat climate change. “Strong national agendas are essential,” – he said.

Elnur Soltanov added that Azerbaijan has also determined priorities related to climate change in its national agenda, among which are the creation of a net-zero zone in Garabagh by 2050 and decreasing the release gases into the atmosphere by 40% by 2050.

The Deputy Minister said that up to 50 thousand guests, as well as , the heads of states and governments, high-level officials of more than a hundred countries are expected to participate at the COP29 which is going to be held on November in Baku and at this point, logistics is one of the most important issues: “The main issues that Azerbaijan will raise at this conference will be the green corridor, green zones, battery storage, how peace and the fight against climate change support each other, and further steps to be taken in this context.”

The deputy minister also recalled that Armenia decided to support Azerbaijan's hosting of COP29.
