On July 18, the chairman of the State Committee for Work with Religious Institutions, Mubariz Gurbanli, met with the executive director of the Conference of European Rabbis, Gady Gronich. According to the information provided to SIA by the press service of the State Council of Azerbaijan, the chairman of the State Committee, welcoming the guests, gave information about the traditions of multiculturalism, interreligious tolerance and harmony in Azerbaijan.
It was stated that in our country, regardless of religion and nationality, everyone has equal rights and people practice their religious beliefs and traditions freely. The consistent policy implemented by President Ilham Aliyev plays an important role in the further strengthening and development of relations based on mutual respect between different religious denominations in Azerbaijan.
Emphasizing that the history of coexistence between Azerbaijanis and Jews is based on centuries, and that Jews living in our country are active in the social and political life of the republic, M. Gurbanli touched on the attention and care shown to Jewish religious communities. Pointing out that preserving different cultures and religious heritage is one of the main priorities of the state, the Chairman of the Committee noted that the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, headed by First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva, has contributed to the repair and restoration of synagogues. He added that at present, 7 Jewish synagogues and 8 religious communities are operating in our country, financial aid is allocated to Jewish religious communities from the state budget every year.
Speaking with satisfaction about his visit to our country, Gady Gronich noted that Azerbaijan is one of the few countries in the world where freedom of religion is ensured. Wide opportunities have been created for freedom of religious belief in our republic, not only in words, but also in practice, and Azerbaijan is a country that can be an example to many states and societies of the world from this aspect. Although the goal of the idea of multiculturalism in Europe has been defined, the ways to it have not been properly defined. In this regard, promotion of intercultural dialogue and promotion of a unique model of religious tolerance and coexistence in the face of Azerbaijan is of great importance in our modern world.
During the meeting held in cordial conditions, ideas were exchanged in the direction of establishing mutual relations between relevant institutions and holding joint events.
