Azerbaijan's chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement is a diplomatic victory of President Ilham Aliyev

As is known, a meeting chaired by President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on the results of the first quarter of the year was held on April 12, 2022. A number of important issues were touched upon at the meeting, one of which is our country's relations with international organizations. The results of the first year of the post-conflict period give us reason to say that all the tasks ahead have been fulfilled in a principled manner, and we have continued our contacts and active cooperation strategy, especially with international organizations. One such organization is the Non-Aligned Movement. It should be noted that the Non-Aligned Movement, which is an important political platform for the establishment and development of effective cooperation between 120 countries, is an extremely important organization in the international arena, demonstrating its commitment to its principles. Commenting on the Non-Aligned Movement, President Ilham Aliyev said: “The Non-Aligned Movement is the second largest international institution after the United Nations. Azerbaijan is currently chairing the Non-Aligned Movement, and as you know, with the consent and support of all member states, our chairmanship has been extended for another year. This is a manifestation of the great confidence shown to us. The Non-Aligned Movement has demonstrated a fair stance on the past conflict immediately after Azerbaijan became a member of this movement, and I believe that additional important events have taken place in this direction since the war. Unequivocally, the Non-Aligned Movement was in solidarity with Azerbaijan both before, during the occupation and during the war, as well as in the post-war period. It should be noted that the Non-Aligned Movement, of which Azerbaijan is currently the chairman, is the second largest organization after the United Nations in terms of the number of members. The Non-Aligned Movement has expressed its open support for Azerbaijan during the pre-war and post-war periods. Of course, the logical sequence of processes in the international arena is such that it has weakened somewhat since the end of the Cold War, when the world is now multipolar, with blocs and coalitions in a state of intense confrontation in the geopolitical system. The role of the Non-Aligned Movement in parallel is growing again thanks to the foreign policy course pursued by President Ilham Aliyev. On the other hand, the decision to join the Non-Aligned Movement in 2011 was important in the context of the conflict with Armenia, which is a priority problematic reality in Azerbaijan's foreign policy strategy. Events have shown that 10 years ago, by making Azerbaijan a member of the world's second largest organization, President Ilham Aliyev actually shaped the prospects for the future and laid the foundation for a strategic victory. The movement has an important platform in conveying the realities of Azerbaijan to the world community. Bringing the realities of Azerbaijan to the world and the work done in this direction and plans for the future will enable the Non-Aligned Movement to achieve great success for Azerbaijan at the international level. In addition, Azerbaijan intends to develop the inter-parliamentary cooperation of the Non-Aligned Movement. Our country will chair the Non-Aligned Movement until 2023. For the first time in history, EU leaders attended an online Non-Aligned Movement summit. EU member states have supported the Non-Aligned Movement's initiative to hold a special session of the UN General Assembly. The Non-Aligned Movement and the European Union are cooperating on a number of issues within the UN Human Rights Council. Continuing to work together to increase global solidarity within the Non-Aligned Movement, strengthen the Movement's position and prestige in the international arena, it is important to hold a high-level meeting of Non-Aligned Movement member states to exchange views on the post-pandemic recovery phase. Given the difficulties posed by the pandemic, it is also appropriate for the Non-Aligned Movement to initiate the establishment of a UN High-Level Panel on Global Recovery after COVID-19.
