US not planning to close diplomatic mission in Moscow — ambassador

The United States is not planning to shut down its diplomatic mission in Moscow, US Ambassador to Russia John Sullivan said in an interview with the Novaya Gazeta daily.

According to Sullivan, US President Joe Biden is not planning to recall him from Moscow either. He stressed that it is very important for his country to have a diplomatic mission in Russia.

He noted that the United States had seen the signs sent by the Russian side that diplomatic relations could be terminated. As an example, he cited the words of Russia’s former President and now deputy secretary of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev, who said that the two countries could close down embassies and look at each other through binoculars or aiming devices. Moreover, in his words, the Russian foreign ministry hinted yesterday that relations between the two countries could be interrupted.
