Azerbaijani hostages Dilgam Asgarov and Shahbaz Guliyev brought to Azerbaijan

Azerbaijani hostages captured by Armenia Dilgam Asgarov and Shahbaz Guliyev are in Baku, AzVision.az reports citing Azerbaijani State Secutiry Service.

In accordance with the Trilateral Declaration signed by the President of the Russian Federation, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia on November 10, 2020, the Azerbaijani side has consistently implemented its obligations about ensuring the rights of Armenian servicemen captured during the war. Information about the Armenian captives was regularly provided to the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Russian Peacekeeping Forces, and some of them were unilaterally released. During their stay in Azerbaijan, these prisoners were provided with the necessary medical care and respectable treatment. They were given the opportunity to keep in touch with their families, and were provided with other rights.

Focusing on the issues of repatriation of Azerbaijani citizens captured or taken hostage during the war for various reasons, we have held talks with the International Committee of the Red Cross, the Russian Peacekeeping Forces and other international organizations and taken all possible measures.

Following the negotiations held in the presence of international organizations and the Command of the Russian peacekeeping forces, an agreement was reached with the Armenian side on the exchange of prisoners of war and hostages on the “all for all” principle, and this process began on December 14.

In the afternoon, a plane carrying Azerbaijani prisoners of war and hostages, as well as Shahbaz Guliyev and Dilgam Asgarov, who had been held hostage by Armenia since July 2014, landed in Baku. After the appropriate quarantine measures are taken, the released persons will meet with their families.

The Azerbaijani side, guided by the principles of humanism, will continue to fulfill its obligations on the exchange of prisoners of war, hostages and bodies of the dead.

Note, in July 2014, during an operation carried out by Armenian special forces in the Shaplar village of the occupied Kalbajar district, Azerbaijani citizen Hasan Hasanov was killed, and Shahbaz Guliyev and Russian citizen Dilgam Asgarov were taken hostage. All of them intended to visit their native places and the graves of their relatives. A "criminal case" was initiated against Shahbaz Guliyev and Dilgam Asgarov. Then the so-called "court" sentenced Asgarov to life imprisonment, and Guliyev - to 22 years in prison.
