Today, there are still families without proper sanitation facilities, young people lacking suitable clothing to find jobs, and entrepreneurs unable to establish their businesses, Anacláudia Rossbach, Executive Director of UN-Habitat, stated during the dialogue session held at the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, SİA informs.
"We cannot allow another generation to grow up in slums. Strong political will is crucial, which is why housing provision must be expanded. Throughout this forum, we have discussed community-based reconstruction projects and government policies. The goal is not only to improve informal settlements but to integrate them into cities. Investments in these settlements should not be seen as social costs but as real investments. Because they truly are investments. When such areas receive investment, multiplier effects occur – jobs are created, local economies grow, and this is reflected in the country's GDP," she stated.
The director also noted that there is already considerable experience in upgrading informal settlements: "There are community-led projects, government programs, and in some countries, national slum-upgrading strategies. Many initiatives have been implemented worldwide. However, as a society, we have not yet managed to scale this up. We have not succeeded enough in turning these projects into lasting change or in integrating the challenges of informal settlements into national statistics, finance, and legislative systems."
