2 police officers killed in gunmen attack in SW Nigeria

Nigerian police said on Wednesday two police officers were killed while thwarting attacks by unidentified gunmen on a police station and a bank in the country's southwestern state of Osun, SİA reports citing Xinhua.

Yemisi Opalola, the police spokesperson in the Osun state, said in a statement on Wednesday that gunmen in four vehicles invaded on Tuesday afternoon the Iragbiji town in Boripe local government area of the state, shooting sporadically and using explosive devices as they moved to attack a police station and a bank in the town.

The building of the police station was partly damaged. The gunmen also blew off a security door of the bank, but their attempt to "break into the bank's strong room was foiled," said Opalola.

The police spokesperson said the gunmen fled after fierce fire exchanges with the police, abandoning their unexploded dynamites and two vehicles.

She appealed to local people to report to the police any person or persons with suspected gunshot wounds. There have been a series of gunmen attacks in Nigeria in recent months, leading to deaths and kidnappings.
