The 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) is an opportunity to set the world on a more sustainable path.
Report informs that UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said this in a video address to an event titled "Global Housing Crisis: What"s the Plan?" held as part of WUF13 in Baku.
According to him, national, regional and local authorities all have a role to play in this regard: "When housing policies are built on equality, solidarity and justice, societies become more inclusive, more resilient and more sustainable. When we focus on those in the most vulnerable situations and involve them in decisions that affect them, we strengthen social cohesion."
He stressed that, against the backdrop of the climate crisis, countries need homes and urban infrastructure that are carbon-neutral and capable of withstanding extreme weather events: "Some cities in Denmark, the United Kingdom and other countries are experimenting with new models of public investment. In this regard, national and local budgets are of great importance, as they determine whether cities can allocate resources to housing and sustainable infrastructure."
