One of the main topics of the expected talks between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping will be the issue of China's controls on the export of rare earth metals, US Trade Representative Jemison Gray said in an interview with Fox News, SİA reports.
He said that Washington's goal is to ensure that these controls do not take effect: "I won't go into detail, but our goal is to make sure that these controls, which are very broad, do not take effect."
Gray added that both sides had "had very constructive talks to find a way forward," but the final decision would depend on President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
A day earlier, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the parties had reached an agreement on the main provisions of the trade agreement.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce also stated after the talks that "the Chinese and US delegations have reached a basic consensus on the mechanisms for resolving relevant trade issues."
Recall that previously, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced that it would impose export controls on a number of goods related to rare earth elements starting November 8. Trump called the decision a "hostile move" and said he was considering imposing a 100 percent tariff on Chinese goods and export restrictions on Chinese software in response. Trump and Xi Jinping are expected to meet in South Korea on Thursday.
