Mukhtar Babayev: Our mountain snow reserves are decreasing, and glaciers are melting each year

Climate change and rising average temperatures have a huge impact on the accumulation and use of water resources globally, leading to the melting of glaciers and shrinking of snowpacks, said Mukhtar Babayev, COP29 President and Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Climate Issues, SİA reports.

As he addressed the panel session titled “Leadership in water governance: Regional and global perspectives” held as part of the 2nd International Exhibition and Conference for Water Management – Baku Water Week, Babayev stated that "Currently, this is a global issue that we are seeing everywhere. Unfortunately, we are also observing the melting of glaciers and reduction of snowpacks in Azerbaijan."

According to Mukhtar Babayev, annual expeditions to the Greater and Lesser Caucasus mountains show a troubling trend: snowpacks are decreasing and glaciers are melting at an alarming pace. This process, a global phenomenon driven by rising average temperatures and uneven precipitation, which is contributing to a significant reduction in Azerbaijan's water content, leading to a higher frequency of floods and mudslides.

“Of course, in addition to countries, international organizations also play an active role in highlighting these issues. For many years, Azerbaijan has recognized the importance of collaborating with international organizations and financial institutions in addressing these challenges,” he noted.

The COP29 President mentioned that Azerbaijan is on the growing list of countries facing or nearing water shortages. He also stressed the need for the country to take serious action, noting that while it may not be possible to completely prevent the risks, it is possible to develop effective adaptation plans.
