Azerbaijan reveals green energy potential of Karabakh and Eastern Zangazur

As part of expanding green energy projects in Azerbaijan's liberated territories, a substation is being built in Jabrayil for the integration of a 240-megawatt solar power plant into the energy system, Vugar Aliyev, Advisor to the Chairman of AzerEnerji OJSC, said at a meeting of the Working Group on Energy Supply Issues, according to Report.

The official noted that, in parallel, the construction of a 100 MW solar power plant by the Nobel Energy company has also been launched.

Aliyev added that in total, the implementation of hydropower projects of nearly 500 MW and solar energy projects with a capacity of 300-400 MW is planned in the Karabakh and Eastern Zangazur economic regions.

He also pointed out that the total green energy potential of the region, including the Khudafarin and Giz Galasi Hydroelectric Power Plants (HPPs), is estimated at more than 1,000 MW.

"This will allow the region's energy needs to be fully met through renewable energy sources by 2040," Aliyev stated.

According to him, the construction of six new HPPs is currently planned in the region. One of them is a hydroelectric power plant located on the Sarsang reservoir. This station, with a nominal capacity of 50 MW, currently operates in a 5-6 MW regime. Other stations are mainly being built on mountain rivers such as Mukhtarchay and Okhchuchay.
