Azerbaijan, Iran strengthen co-op within North-South corridor

Azerbaijan and Iran have signed key agreements on transport and trade development, facilitating the rapid completion of the North-South corridor, SIA informs via IRNA.

At the 16th meeting of the Joint Economic Commission of Azerbaijan and Iran, Iran's Minister of Roads and Urban Development Farzaneh Sadegh stated that the North-South corridor is one of the country's most important transit routes, where the Rasht-Astara section plays a key role.

According to her, Azerbaijan, located between Russia and Iran, holds a strategic position in cargo transportation between the three countries. Complete mutual understanding on this issue contributes to the development and completion of the corridor project, she noted.

At the meeting, held after a three-year break, the parties signed several agreements on preferential trade, road and rail transportation, and increasing the number of flights between the countries.

It was also noted that the completion of this project will allow achieving a transit volume of 15 million tons.

During the meeting, an agreement was signed between the railway departments of Iran and Azerbaijan on completing the construction of a railway terminal in Astara, which will be an important step towards implementing the North-South corridor.
