"More than 500 million people are in conflict or conflict-prone areas"

Conflicts and their side effects are further exacerbating global climate problems, Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov stated at the Relief, Recovery and Peace Day at COP29 in Baku.

Bayramov noted that one of the main rationales for Azerbaijan's presidency at COP29 is to bring all parties together on this issue: "We are developing solution-oriented approaches with various countries. I want to thank our partners for their trust and confidence in Azerbaijan. We cannot waste time. Statements need to be turned into concrete actions."

The minister added that, by 2021, 355 million households, or approximately 1.3 billion people, were exposed to climate risks: "Of these, 40%—142 million households or more than 500 million people—are in conflict or conflict-prone areas. In response to the increasing voice of the most vulnerable groups, the COP29 Presidency has been leading international efforts in recent months to strengthen joint action on the link between climate and peace."
