The manager of a top English football team revealed on Friday that he attempted to sign Lionel Messi, Gerard Pique and Cesc Fabregas while the three players were playing for Barcelona's reserves in 2003, SIA reports with reference to AA.
Talking to the British media, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger said "We wanted to take Fabregas, Messi and Pique. It worked only for Fabregas."
"It was not completely down to an apartment in the end. It was down to the fact that, in the end, Messi was comfortable at Barcelona," Wenger added.
Now playing for English Premier League giants Chelsea, Spanish international Cesc Fabregas arrived at Arsenal in 2003 when he was 16 years old.
In a short space of time, he became indispensable to the North London side.
Having served Arsenal for eight years, Fabregas was purchased by his ex-club Barcelona for a €34 million transfer fee in August 2011.
Three years later, he was bought by Arsenal's fierce rivals Chelsea for €33 million.
Fabregas, Messi and Pique, are all regarded as trademarks of Barcelona's youth academy, which is commonly referred to as La Masia -- Spanish for farmhouse.
