Iran loses 1.8 million Azerbaijani tourists after embassy attack in Tehran
Iran has lost 1.8 million Azerbaijani tourists as a result of the armed attack on Azerbaijan's embassy in Tehran, Iran's Deputy Minister of Cultural Heritage, Anoushiravan Mohseni, said during a press briefing, according to SİA, which cites Telegram channel Free Iran.
"Following the incident against an Azerbaijani citizen [at the embassy], we lost 1.8 million tourists from Azerbaijan," the official stated.
The attack took place on January 27, 2023, at 08:30 Baku time. Iranian citizen Yasin Huseynzadeh, armed with a Kalashnikov rifle, stormed the embassy"s security post, killing Chief of Security Orkhan Asgarov and wounding security officers Vasif Taghiyev and Mahir Imanov, who attempted to stop the assault.
On January 30, Azerbaijan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs evacuated embassy staff from Tehran, suspending the mission's activities. The State Security Service of Azerbaijan subsequently opened a criminal case under the relevant articles of the Criminal Code.
Orkhan Asgarov was buried at the Second Alley of Martyrs in Baku. On February 3, 2023, by decree of the President of Azerbaijan, Orkhan Asgarov was posthumously awarded the For the Motherland medal. Vasif Taghiyev was awarded the Order of Valor (1st degree), while Mahir Imanov received the For the Motherland medal.
Following the attack, the Azerbaijani embassy's operations in Tehran were suspended, and its staff along with their families were evacuated to Baku on January 29, 2023.
After negotiations between the two countries, on July 15, 2024, the Azerbaijani embassy in Iran resumed its activities at a new location, with the ambassador and diplomatic personnel returning to Tehran.
The trial of Yasin Huseynzadeh lasted two years. Upon conclusion, Iran's Ministry of Justice announced that he had been sentenced to death. The Supreme Court of Iran upheld the ruling, after which the case was transferred to Tehran for execution.
Huseynzadeh was executed by hanging on the morning of May 21.
