Head of PA’s Sector: Unnecessary use of foreign words in media negatively affects language environment of young people
President Ilham Aliyev’s valuable thoughts on the purity and preservation of the Azerbaijani language and its literary norms, as well as his renewed attention to this issue after raising it 10 years ago, demonstrate how sensitively and seriously the state leadership approaches and values this matter. This indicates that despite all the efforts made over the past decade, the situation is still not completely satisfactory, said Kamran Hasanov, Head of the Sector for work with mass media at the Department for Work with NGOs and Communication of the Presidential Administration, at a conference titled “Proper Application of Azerbaijani Literary Language Norms in the Media,” APA reports.
He stated that many important steps have been taken to preserve the literary language: “During this period, the legislative framework in Azerbaijan has been improved. In 2002, the Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan ‘On the State Language’ was adopted, thus establishing a legal framework for protecting the purity of the language and safeguarding it from foreign influences. Within the framework of state programs and action plans, various decisions have been made to monitor and promote the correct use of the Azerbaijani language. Special attention is paid to teaching the literary norms of the Azerbaijani language in schools and universities.”
According to Kamran Hasanov, the promotion of the Azerbaijani language internationally and on various global platforms is strongly supported: “However, the Azerbaijani language also faces challenges such as globalization, technological development, and foreign influences. Globalization is a reality of our time and, as in other areas, it affects the preservation of the language’s uniqueness. I believe it is possible to strike a balance between globalization and maintaining the purity of the language. New terms can either harm the purity of our language or enrich it instead.
The unnecessary use of foreign words in the media violates the norms of the literary language and negatively affects the language environment of young people. Therefore, the media and journalists bear great responsibility in introducing new terms into our language and in preserving its richness and originality.”
