Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has announced his resignation.
İn an address announcing his resignation, Vučić said: "Today is the day when I announce my resignation," noting that he was addressing citizens for the last time as President of Serbia.
"Dear citizens, today is the day when I announce my resignation, and, addressing you for the last time as President of the Republic of Serbia, I will try not to tire you with figures," Vučić said.
He noted that he would read part of his speech from a written text and deliver the rest based on his own thoughts.
"The time has come to make a decision. History teaches us that progress is never achieved by chance. It is achieved through difficult decisions, a person's responsibility before their own conscience, and the determination to move forward," the Serbian president stressed.
In his address, Vučić, citing former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, said that after many years at the helm of the state, progress is rarely achieved at the desired pace, while governing means making difficult decisions and taking responsibility for every decision.
He also thanked citizens, saying that they had placed great trust in him twice, and spoke about a "new chapter" awaiting Serbia.
Vučić won the first round of the 2017 presidential election with 55.08% of the vote. His second presidential term began in 2022 and, under the regular schedule, was due to end in 2027.
Under the Constitution of Serbia, the duties of the president will be performed by former President of the National Assembly Ana Brnabić. Presidential elections must be held within three months of the head of state"s resignation.
Vučić said that more than a month would pass between the conclusion of the parliamentary elections and the announcement of the presidential election, as the election campaign would last for a shorter period.
